Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two (Mark 6:7; NRSV).

The Blessings of Spiritual Companionship

The apostles certainly could have covered more ground if they had been sent out each on his own, but Jesus choose to send them out in pairs. Perhaps Jesus did this because of the culture of the day that required two witnesses for reliable testimony. But there is also something to be said for traveling with a companion.

When we travel with another person, we can share the wonders, joys, and struggles of our experiences. Two sets of eyes and ears may help ensure that nothing of importance is missed along the way. If we encounter a detour and must discern an alternate route, two heads are better than one. Traveling with a companion can encourage us to go places we normally would not consider exploring on our own.

When we consider our own spiritual journey, first we must recognize that we never travel alone. God is always with us! A spiritual director joins the journey as someone who helps the directee nurture her or his relationship with God. Unlike pastoral counseling (which focuses on solving problems in a person’s life), spiritual direction focuses on a relationship with God that is already present and always evolving.

In spiritual direction, both director and directee listen to the Holy Spirit who is the true director. The spiritual director’s primary roles are to promote attentiveness to God’s movement in the directee’s life and to provide a safe environment to evaluate the directee’s response to God’s daily promptings.
