Abbey Days of Reflection

An Abbey Day of Reflection is a time and space set apart for spiritual renewal. We welcome men and women of all faiths who wish to come and pray with us.

The day begins with Morning Prayer with the Saint John’s monastic community at 7:00 a.m. in the Abbey Church, followed by breakfast in the Abbey Guesthouse. Participants gather in the church again at noon for Midday Prayer followed by lunch in the guesthouse. The remainder of the morning and afternoon schedules differ, depending upon the monk presenter, but there is always time for individual reflection and a visit to The Saint John’s Bible gallery in the Alcuin Library. The retreat day ends at 3:00 p.m.

Cost: $55 includes programming, breakfast, lunch, refreshments, and materials.

Extending the Day

In terms of travel, some people will prefer to drive and arrive by 6:45 a.m. to prepare for Morning Prayer. For those who would like to come the evening before, rooms are available at the Abbey Guesthouse at a discounted rate.

At the conclusion of the Day of Reflection, participants may choose to stay through the afternoon and evening, visiting campus sites such as the Art Center, Hill Museum & Manuscript Library, the Liturgical Press showroom, the Saint John’s Pottery studio, the SJU bookstore, the Arboretum and woods, and more. All guests are welcome to join the monastic community for Eucharist at 5:00 p.m. and Evening Prayer at 7:00 p.m.

As noted above, two meals are part of the Day of Reflection itself. Additional meals may be purchased in the Abbey Guesthouse dining room.

Participants may also extend their time with an individual retreat for one or more additional days, depending on room availability.
